Late to the Party: Dirty Projectors, Still Going and Washed Out

I find the colloquialism "late to the party" quite interesting. Considering it's usage, most would argue that it has a negative connotation, no? And yet, everyone, from my mother to the alt bro who snickers at me for my unironic wearing of corduroys, strives to arrive "fashionable late" to most of the events they attend. Moreover, another cliche states that it's better "late than never." It's no wonder that English is a tough language to learn.

Nevertheless, I've been late to the party on three groups I'm really digging on these days and instead of writing three more "Cellar Door" posts this week, here's all three.

1. Dirty Projectors - Stillness is the Move

I thought Heavy D was going to call me screaming or sobbing when Pitchfork gave Dirty Projectors' Bitte Orca a better rating than Veckatimest. Instead, he wrote me something about accessibility that I can't find in my email. Nevertheless, "Stillness is the Move" might surpass "My Girls" as my favorite song of 2009. I'm a total sucker for pop with ladies on the mic. This is an uber-jam. I'm not sure what else to say. Moving on...

2. Still Going - Still Going Theme

I guess Still Going is on DFA? I guess this song came out in 2007? I'm bummed I didn't find Still Going until now. They (he/she/them/it?) build awesome (as in, truly awe-inspiring) grooves with meticulous song construction. Another mega-jam. This is the kind of track that makes me wish I had the time and patience to practice on the 1s and 2s just so I could drop it in a set during a party. Check their latest - "Spaghetti Circus" - here.

3. Washed Out - Feel It All Around

Washed Out has caused quite a stir in the blogosphere. This type of music, whatever you want to call it (I'm partial to GorillavsBearCore, but that's just me), has been all over the place this summer, and with good reason. I think there's something great about a person sitting down and banging out a few tracks on their laptop at night. As we've discussed here before, it gives the delusional the sense that anyone could be the next big star on the interwebs.

I'm tempted to end this with some other cliche containing the word "late," but I'll resist. ¡Nos vemos!
