A Heavy Dose of Americana

Lately I have been listening almost exclusively to low-fi, American folk-rock. What does that mean, you ask? I don't really know, but its all good. The journey started with Woods latest release Songs of Shame. This fuzzy, backwoods quartet produces unbelievably catchy songs bustling with crackling guitars and muffled falsetto. Not so far off are The War On Drugs who I evidently am a little late to. Lead singer Kurt Vile reminds me of a folksier, more raw version of Jeff Tweedy, which can't be a bad thing. I can't really say Papercuts is all that low-fi, but "Future Primitive" certainly crackles enough to keep me interested.

Woods - Rain On
The War On Drugs - Arms Like Boulders
Papercuts - Future Primitive

Songs of Shame is out now on Woodsist. The War on Drugs, Wagonwheel Blues came out a long time ago on Secretly Canadian. Papercuts brand new album You Can Have What You Want just dropped on Gnomonsong. You should get all three.
